CLUBNIGHT PROGRAMME
WEDNESDAY NIGHT PROGRAMME
Starts 8 pm promptly
-
1st September – Open Night: Time to get out those photos from your recent trips and share them with Club Members. If you have a number of photos and are prepared to give a presentation at a Club night, please see Pat to arrange this.
- Wednesday 8 September – Alphonse Barrington
Tonight a DVD from the Explorers series by Peter Elliott will be shown. Geoff Spearpoint and Kim Logan accompanied Peter Elliot as he retraced the route of Barrington and two companions, who, in 1864, prospected their way from Lake Wakitipu through to Lake Alabaster, the Pyke River Valley, Cascade to Theta Tarn before returning via Red Mountains, Stag Pass, Barrier Flat, Intervention Saddle, the Olivine River and back to Lake Alabaster – seven months of arduous
travel suffering severe privations along the way. Certainly not as we know tramping, but come and perhaps be inspired.
- Wednesday 15 September – From a Medley of Meanderings by Murray
During the past 10 months Murray Presland has enjoyed a number of short journeys in many parts of New Zealand - from Fiordland and the Eyre Mountains, through Arthur's Pass and the Hokitika, to the Central North Island. He will describe his delight in being able to wander off at will (almost) to explore more of our own country.
- Wednesday 22 September – Beautiful Encounters while on Art Adventures
Magical encounters with nature while out tramping, mountain biking, horse riding and motorcycling. Join Sue McKee for a collection of her images from the last few years of adventuring out into nature.
- Wednesday 29 September – Mountains, Mausoleums and Murder along the Silk Road
For the past 14 years, club member Les Molloy has been visiting the wild places and historic sites of China, Pakistan, Central Asia, Mongolia, Siberia and Japan. Some of these visits have been on behalf of IUCN (The World Conservation Union) to evaluate mountain, forest, desert and steppe grassland sites for UNESCO natural World Heritage status. Other trips have been guiding groups along the ancient Silk Road or trekking into (or around) the remote mountain ranges of Central Asia and Tibet – the Karakoram, Hindu Kush, Tien Shan, Pamir, Kun Lun, and Meili Xueshan. Les will take us on an illustrated journey through this remote part of Asia and tell us something of the recreational, cultural and political significance of the Silk Road today.
- Wednesday 6 October – Ama Dablam and Everest
In June this year Nicholas Boyack and Louise Gibson spent 23 days trekking in the Everest region. Nicholas will talk about the first part of the trek, which took in Ama Dablam Base Camp and Everest Base Camp. Ama Dablam is considered by many to be the most beautiful mountain in the world.
